[This marvellous work by the Singaporean composer Benjamin Yeo outlines a number of beautiful impressions of the magnificent fauna and flora of Gondwana (or Gondwanaland). Some unusual sounds of nature announce a dazzling allegro with lots of percussion and swift time changes. A lovely romantic melody reflects the silence of nature. At the end of the work, the initial theme reappears, this time in a grand, monumental instrumentation.] - from publisher’s website

[Fiery and exciting, contrasted by an elegant and emotional middle section, “Phoenix” is sure to capture your audience right from the very first note! Beautiful melodies and counterpoints are carefully crafted to create awareness for your students to understand the importance of the role they play in your band. Also a great teaching tool for contrasting articulations and styles, this work is sure to shine in your next concert, festival or contest. A definite educator, performer and audience pleaser!] - from publisher’s website

The Phoenix is a mythical bird of great beauty fabled to live five to six hundred years in the Arabian wilderness, to burn itself on a funeral pyre, and to rise from its ashes in the freshness of youth and live through another cycle of years before its next rebirth: often an emblem of immortality or of reborn idealism or hopes. It is also known to be a fire spirit with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet.

The music aims to depict the graceful Phoenix soaring endlessly into the night sky, with its fiery nature as the main drive for the fast theme. The expressive middle section illustrates the beauty of this mythical bird as it spreads its brightly colored wings proudly, enhancing the mystery of the night sky. The reprise of the fast theme catches a glimpse of the majestic rise of the Phoenix from the flame, signifying hope and optimism!

This work was commissioned by the St. Andrew’s Junior School Military Band, St. Anthony’s Primary School and the St. Stephen’s School Brass Bands as their choice piece for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010 Central Judging of Concert/Brass Bands (Primary level).

[Gorgeous! This expressive piece of work by Benjamin Yeo paints a musical picture of a young child sleeping soundly beside the window, listening to the whispering voice of the moon. Benjamin’s careful and creative scoring makes this work a great tool to remind your players about the importance of good tone production, balance and phrasing; and at the same time, a manageable yet effective piece with interesting percussive elements to portray this beautiful night setting. This tune will definitely leave a deep and long-lasting impression to both your performers and audiences after your next concert. You certainly cannot miss this one!] - from publisher’s website

It is a windy night, with rustlings of leaves from the nearby lonely tree that breaks the otherwise silent night. The moon watches over the child, whispering to him to take good care of himself from the chilly winds. Raindrops start to fall and the moon loses sight of the child as rain clouds begin to hinder its vision. The moon struggles to see the child, “take care my child, take care…”, the moon whispered. He seems to have heard the moon as he opened his eyes slowly and returned with a smile.

This work was commissioned by the Montfort Secondary School Military Band, Mr. Winston Aw, Band Director, Singapore.

Legend of the Ancient Hero (Cover)

Legend of the Ancient Hero

Level of Difficulty: Grade 4.5
Performance Duration: 8’19″
Series: Concert Band
Published: 2008
Full Band Set: #012-3697-00 (US$78)
Full Score only: #012-3697-01 (US$8)
Compact Disc: WFR 358 - Toward the North Star (US$14.95)

Dramatic and powerful, LEGEND OF THE ANCIENT HERO tells the musical story of a warrior in ancient times who risked his life to save his country from being conquered. Combined with exciting rhythmic elements and a contrasting lyrical section, this programmatic work will definitely be the highlight in your band concert, contest or festival performances! Solos for flute, trumpet and saxophone also provide opportunities to feature the best in your band. Simply exceptional!

Written in seven short movements, the piece depicts the story of a young warrior who travelled far to the battlefied from his kingdom leading his army troops on galloping horses. At the war-front, a distant bugle call and the war drums are heard signifying the start of the war. Tension begins and both troops started attack as they galloped towards each other on their horses. Chaos and bloodshed are marked by clashing dissonances and irregular meters in the music. As the war comes to an end, soldiers who lost their lives covered the battlefied in red. The aftermath of the war is a tragic one although peace on the ground resumes. The beauty of the main theme is heard as it reaches the climax giving its highest tribute to the Hero. The country is saved and the people sees hope in starting their new lives. However, the Hero has not been forgotten. His “un-perished” spirit remained in the people’s heart and his name lives forever as the piece approaches to an exciting end.

This piece had its World Premiere by the St. Andrew’s Junior College Concert Band (Singapore) at the Victoria Concert Hall on 27 January 2008.
